After Seeing A Woman Feed Cats, A Clever Crow Learns To Meow

He sounds exactly like a cat 😲

Neslihan Oranc, an animal enthusiast, has been placing food out on the balcony for neighborhood cats to eat since she moved to Turkey. When the food runs out, the cats let her know by meowing at her door, pleading for more.

This routine didn’t seem to go unnoticed. Someone had been observing Neslihan and her feline companions from afar, unbeknownst to them.

He was also taking notes.

NESLIHAN ORANCI

Neslihan was at home one day when she heard a familiar sound: meowing from outside. One of the hungry cats appeared to have come to find the food bowl empty and was now begging her for more.

Looking through the glass, though, Neslihan instantly realized it wasn’t a cat. It turned out to be a hooded crow who’d learnt to meow so he could receive free food as well.

Naslihan told The Dodo, “I was quite startled.” “I’ve never heard a crow talk in catlike tones!”

Neslihan, of course, fed the crow once the first shock faded. Then she saw he’d picked up some more cat lingo.

“As he ate, he created the furious cat sound that cats make when they fight,” Neslihan explained, “so that any cats surrounding would be scared away.”

The crow’s cat-speak was so convincing that it’s probable he’d been executing this amazing hoax without Neslihan realizing for quite some time. But she doesn’t mind; she believes he deserves to be rewarded for his ingenuity.

“It provokes a lot of thought,” Neslihan added. “Thousands of years of domestication taught cats how to converse with humans. The crow, on the other hand, picked it up fast and for the same reason. It appears that they have decoded our language before we have decoded theirs!”
