Henry Harris-Burland, Starship’s vice president of marketing, verified that the robot was indeed on its way to a client with a grocery delivery and was not lost after McCormack’s tweet went viral. “On each of the 10,000–15,000 autonomous deliveries our robots carry out each day, they can go across a range of terrain and choose the safest and most effective path. According to Harris-Burland, “in this instance, the route just so happened to be a paved walk through a woodland area in Northampton, UK.
Even though we are aware of all the facts, McCormack’s photograph of the lone robot wandering through the forest nevertheless conjures up romantic notions of a futuristic machine blending in with nature.
