A teaching assistant from Egypt who killed 60 lab mice to thwart a colleague’s research has been given a six-month prison term.

According to a police custody record, the man, Armian M, acknowledged poisoning the mice’s drinking water in order to kill them.

When his colleague, a South Valley University veterinary pathology fellow, arrived at her lab, she discovered all of her mice had passed away.

The police report stated that she later discovered formaldehyde residue on the floor and in the water bowls inside the mice’s cages.

According to the woman’s statement to the police, she believes that her colleague killed the mice to thwart her research and jeopardize her chances of earning a degree.

In the Upper Egyptian province of Qena, a misdemeanors court found him guilty and imposed a punishment of 50 pounds ($2.67).
