Great-Grandmother Rekindles Photography Interest by Documenting Brown Bear Antics

Jenny Hibbert, a photographer, fell in love with photography as a child. But life intervened, and she didn’t pick it up again until much later in life, when it served as a creative outlet during a difficult divorce. The great-grandmother, who is now 70 years old, is becoming well-known for her wildlife photography, particularly her charming images of brown bears.

Hibbert travels to Finland frequently, braving the cold to photograph her beloved bears in different seasons. She comes prepared to face low temperatures and wait in a hide for up to 16 hours to get the shots she wants. It can be difficult work, but when a bear appears, it is well worth it.

“When it all comes together,” she tells My Modern Met, “it can be the most magical moment ever, and you forget all the cold and discomforts.”

While bears are a recurring theme in her photography, Hibbert enjoys all of Finland’s wildlife. She has been able to document the vast array of animals that call the country home by visiting at different times of the year. Her work is inspiring, especially given that she only bought her first digital camera when she was 62 years old. She now has quite a collection.

“I have a Canon 1D MarkIV, a 5D MarkIII, and a 7D MarkII,” she explains. Hibbert’s lenses are a Canon 300mm f/2.8, a Canon 70-200mm f/2.8, and a Sigma 150-600mm. She uses a 24-70mm lens when she needs a shorter focal length.

She hopes that through her work, people will be inspired to pick themselves up during difficult times and remember that better days are ahead. And that sometimes, rather than sitting at home, we just need to get out and do something for ourselves. “It worked well for me,” she says.

For the time being, she’s looking forward to new photographic adventures, which she’ll undoubtedly share with the world on Instagram.
