Do You See Anything – Crypsis

In ecology, crypsis is the ability of an animal or a plant to avoid observation or detection by other animals. It may be a predation strategy or an antipredator adaptation. Methods include camouflage, nocturnality, subterranean lifestyle and mimicry. Crypsis can involve visual, olfactory, or auditory concealment.

As an additional note, in addition to crypsis, it is a unique trick of survival of crocodiles during the dry season, called estivation.

Some crocodiles choose to sit outside the dry season rather than migrate to another river or lake. Crocodiles dig burrows in the soft riverbed, the mud finally dries up around them and encloses them for the dry season, and thus protect them.

Occasionally, all you can see is an eye peeking out of the mud, this is a hibernation-like process called ‘estivation’. Deep in the mud, they can survive for three or four months without water, which is amazing. When the rain finally comes, they emerge for a long, refreshing shower.
