“Miracle twins”: Zoo Welcomes The Arrival of Two Incredibly Rare Asian Elephants

Every time an animal gives birth, especially when it’s twins, two new life-forms enter the world, it is a momentous occasion.

However, twin pregnancies are extremely uncommon for many species, making them all the more remarkable when they do occur.

Because of this, one zoo is celebrating the birth of “miracle twin” Asian elephant babies, which is incredibly unusual for the species.

Asian elephants Mali and Doc gave birth to a set of twin male elephants on October 24. This information was recently released by the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, New York.

It’s amazing since just 1% of elephant births worldwide result in twins, and when they do, the kids are frequently stillborn and occasionally the mother doesn’t even make it.

Fortunately, that wasn’t the case in this instance; mom Mali and the twins are both doing fine, and there have been “no complications,” according to the zoo.

The first-born calf, which weighed 220 pounds, was described in a news statement as being “absolutely healthy” when it was born. The second baby was “noticeably weaker” when it was delivered ten hours later, but owing to the on-site veterinarians, his condition has greatly improved. He has a 237-pound weight.

Due to the rarity, the second twin’s entrance allegedly left the staff “astonished,” but they were ready for anything and did their best to keep the newborns healthy.

Zoo Director Ted Fox stated, “I can’t praise my team enough for all they’ve done these past few weeks to assure the care and safety of Mali and her twins. “It has been amazing to see them work and see the high level of professionalism, skill, and attention under pressure.”

More than 20,000 Asian elephants remain in the wild, making it an endangered species that is in danger from illegal poaching and habitat loss.

The birth of not just one, but two elephants will greatly increase the likelihood of their survival in the future.

“This is truly an historic moment for the zoo and our community. I couldn’t be prouder of our exceptional animal care team, the support of the veterinary staff and their tremendous dedication to Mali and the twins,” said County Executive Ryan J. McMahon.

“The important research happening right here at the zoo will have a significant impact worldwide on behalf of this magnificent endangered species.”

What amazing news. We’re thrilled by the arrival of these extremely rare, endangered elephant twins, and are glad they are doing so well!

Please share this incredible news if you love elephants!
