For over a week, China has been captivated by a herd of 15 wandering elephants, large, lost, and causing a stir in the country’s southwest.
Millions have tuned in to live streams of the elephants, who have trekked more than 500 kilometres since escaping a nature reserve in South China last year.
Drones recently captured footage of the elephants taking a nap after their long journey, with a playful calf adorably scrambling out from under one of the resting adults.
Online Sensation and Viral Moments
The herd’s adventures have captivated netizens as the elephants trample crops, roam towns, and occasionally cause over a million dollars in damages.

Despite the fascination, the reason for the elephants’ northward journey remains unclear. Some experts suggest shrinking rainforests may be driving them; others believe the herd might simply be lost, sparking concern among online fans.
