Capturing the Beauty of a Partial Solar Eclipse: A Camel’s-Eye View

What’s happening behind that camel? Well, it turns out that a partial eclipse of the Sun is taking place. Back in December 2019, lucky spectators located in a narrow band on Earth had the chance to witness a rare celestial event – a total solar eclipse. Among these spectators was Joshua Cripps, who captured a stunning photo of the event with a camel in the foreground.

While many camels may have been in the vicinity of the eclipse, this particular one found itself perfectly positioned between the camera, the Moon, and the Sun, creating a captivating image. However, capturing this moment wasn’t just a matter of luck. It took careful planning, precise timing, and proper alignment to capture such an awe-inspiring shot.

The image shows the Sun partially eclipsed by the Moon as it rises, but the eclipse itself continued as an annular eclipse, also known as a ring of fire. During an annular eclipse, the Moon is not close enough to the Earth to completely block the Sun, creating a ring of sunlight around the Moon’s silhouette.

Interestingly, the camel’s hair and rope fray appear to glow in the image. This effect is due to forward scattering of sunlight, which is dominated by quantum mechanical diffraction. This phenomenon creates an unusual and striking visual effect in the photograph.

If you missed the 2019 eclipse, don’t worry – there’s another one coming up in June of this year. Like the previous event, it will also be an annular eclipse. So, mark your calendars and get ready to witness one of nature’s most extraordinary displays. And who knows, maybe you’ll even catch a camel in your shot!
