1,000,000 Mosquitoes Caught in a Scientific Endeavor
What would it look like to be surrounded by a million mosquitoes? The answer might make your skin crawl, and thanks to researchers in Florida, we now have a visual insight into this overwhelming scenario.
Erik Jackson, the deputy director of Lee County Mosquito Control, explained that mosquito collection is a routine part of their work. “We’re collecting these … all the time,” he noted. However, what made this collection exceptional was the staggering number – 1 million mosquitoes.
“We’ve had people call and say the mosquitoes are terrible, we got a million mosquitoes around us,” Jackson shared. “So, I mean, we’ve heard that so often you know, when there is that biting pressure, when the mosquitoes are around. I thought, ‘You know, people really need to see what a million mosquitoes look like.'”
The immense gathering of mosquitoes was piled high in a bright orange Home Depot bucket, a sight that prompted numerous staff members to capture the moment with photographs.
While this collection might seem like a feat of curiosity, it served a serious scientific purpose. The 1 million mosquitoes were part of a project in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Agriculture to assess the efficacy of trapping in practical mosquito control rather than just research purposes.
Jackson expressed hope for the project’s success, stating, “I mean, you look at this, you think it’s promising but…we’ll see.” The mosquitoes were trapped in one specific area of Sanibel Island during the summer of 2021, and with another year of research ahead, scientists are optimistic that their efforts will make future mosquito seasons a bit less daunting for residents and visitors alike.
