The Horse Who Refused to Be Ridden

Every now and then, even horses just want a day off from their usual routine. Case in point, a mare named Sugar has become an internet sensation for her creative way of avoiding work. The viral tweet, posted by user Jim Rose, features a picture of Sugar lying on her side in the grass, appearing as if she’s peacefully napping. The text accompanying the image reads, “Meet Sugar, she doesn’t like to be ridden. If Sugar is approached with a saddle she lies down and pretends to be asleep. Sugar refuses to open her eyes until the riders leave.”

This clever tactic struck a chord with many, garnering 433,000 likes and nearly 40,000 retweets at the time of writing.

Responses to the tweet ranged from praise to concern. Some users celebrated Sugar’s defiant spirit, comparing her act to making a statement and walking away in horse terms. Others marveled at Sugar’s ability to employ non-violent resistance and stand her ground, affectionately referring to her as “Comrade Sugar.”

On the flip side, some expressed worries that Sugar might be unwell or in distress. One user voiced concern about horses lying down, assuming it was a sign of illness or injury. However, horse enthusiasts in the thread clarified that horses do, in fact, lie down to sleep, particularly during deeper REM sleep cycles.

As with many viral stories, some follow-up tweets questioned the authenticity of the photo, suggesting that it might be a stock image. These users hinted that Jim Rose’s followers might not be taking the tweet seriously, indicating a potential humorous or lighthearted context to the post.

Jim Rose’s Twitter DMs are currently closed, and he hasn’t responded to requests for comment from The Post.
