Over 100 million under winter alerts as ice, snow threaten 22 states across Great Lakes, Northeast

A powerful winter storm has descended upon the United States, placing over 100 million people under winter alerts across 22 states. From the Great Lakes to the Northeast, communities are bracing for the impact of ice, snow, and freezing rain, threatening travel, power grids, and daily life. This storm, the first of a potentially devastating duo, has already caused havoc in the Midwest and is now targeting major cities in the East.

The Icy Grip Tightens:

Winter Weather Advisories stretch over 1,500 miles, warning of slick roads and hazardous conditions. Major metropolitan areas, including Chicago, Columbus, Cleveland, Philadelphia, Washington D.C., and New York City, face perilous morning commutes. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Cleveland urged drivers to avoid travel if possible, highlighting the dangers of freezing rain and lingering icy patches.

Power Outages and Travel Chaos:

While the Midwest experienced primarily travel disruptions, the East Coast faces a higher risk of significant icing, particularly in Maryland and Pennsylvania. Ice Storm Warnings are in effect, with the potential for widespread power outages and tree damage due to ice accumulations reaching up to half an inch. “We’re going to see the freezing rain there start after midnight (Wednesday night), so that is going to be the icing event we are calling for and afraid of,” FOX Weather Meteorologist Bob Van Dillen warned. Pennsylvania has already implemented vehicle restrictions due to the anticipated ice storm impacts.

Snow and Rain Complicate Matters:

Along the I-95 corridor, from Washington D.C. to southern New England, freezing rain is expected, with snow a concern in the New York City area. Further north, cities like Hartford and Boston could see snow during the Thursday morning commute. While warmer air is expected to change the snow to freezing rain or rain in many areas, northern New England may see significant snowfall, potentially exceeding 6 inches.

Midwest Impact and Beyond:

The storm’s initial impact was felt in the Midwest, with reports of numerous accidents and stalled vehicles in Kansas and Missouri. Major highways were brought to a standstill, and schools were closed. The storm’s second act is predicted to bring more challenges, with Pennsylvania again in the bull’s eye for impactful ice. Heavy rain and potential flooding are also concerns in the Ohio Valley and Appalachians.

Winter Safety and Preparedness for Your Home and Garden:

This severe winter weather underscores the importance of preparedness. Power outages are a significant threat, so it’s crucial to have a reliable generator and know how to use it safely. Home winterization is essential to prevent frozen pipes and protect your property. Stock up on emergency supplies, including food, water, and warm clothing.

Winter driving requires extra caution. Learn how to drive safely on icy and snowy roads. Keep your car properly maintained and equipped for winter conditions.

Protecting your garden during winter is also vital. Take steps to protect plants from frost and snow damage. Proper snow removal techniques can prevent damage to walkways and driveways.

Ice melt is essential for safe passage, but choose pet-friendly options to protect your furry friends. Be aware of the dangers of ice melt to pets and take precautions.

Stay Informed:

Stay tuned to local weather forecasts and heed warnings from local authorities. Being prepared is the best way to protect yourself, your family, and your property during this winter storm.
