US Science Is Under Attack

The foundation of scientific progress in the United States is under siege. With a wave of executive orders and policy reversals, the current administration has thrown the nation’s scientific institutions into chaos. From halting funding to censoring research, the impact on critical fields such as climate science, public health, and technological innovation is devastating. This war on science threatens not only researchers but also the very fabric of American progress, innovation, and global leadership.

US Science Is Under Attack

Just weeks into the new administration, scientific research across the country is in complete disarray. A series of executive orders have stripped funding, restricted diversity initiatives, and erased key scientific data from public records. These moves have left the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National Science Foundation (NSF), NASA, the CDC, and other agencies struggling to navigate a hostile political environment.

The situation has been described to IFLScience as “catastrophic” and “a new McCarthyism”.

Defunding Innovation: The NSF Funding Freeze

One of the most alarming developments is the funding freeze at the National Science Foundation (NSF). Even after a memo rescinding the pause was issued, many grants remain suspended or under strict review for “non-compliant” terms such as “diversity,” “equity,” and “inclusion.” This effectively blocks research that aims to increase access to STEM fields for underrepresented groups, threatening the future of scientific discovery.

Scientists are left wondering: What does the administration hope to achieve by halting scientific progress?

Censorship and Data Removal: The Dismantling of Transparency

NASA, the CDC, and NOAA have also been targeted. NASA has erased information on accessibility and inclusion, while NOAA, which provides crucial climate data, has seen its research suppressed. Reports indicate that pages detailing carbon dioxide levels, climate change trends, and environmental justice have been removed, a move that appears politically motivated.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has been ordered to purge references to transgender individuals and remove scientific studies that contradict the administration’s ideology. The scrubbing of medical and public health data is unprecedented, raising concerns about censorship in academia and the broader scientific community.

A Climate of Fear Among Scientists

Many researchers fear for their jobs, funding, and even their safety. Scientists working in climate research, medicine, and social sciences are particularly vulnerable. The crackdown on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives has led to an atmosphere of uncertainty, where even mentioning certain terms could put careers at risk.

“I am deeply concerned about my students’ education and safety,” one professor shared. Others fear an exodus of top scientists to countries that still prioritize research and development, leading to an irreversible brain drain.

The Bigger Picture: Controlling Academia and Innovation

The erosion of scientific independence is not just about funding—it’s about control. By dismantling institutions that promote innovation, the administration is reshaping the narrative of science itself. Critical research on climate change, disease prevention, and space exploration is being sidelined in favor of ideology-driven agendas.

The Future of Science in the US

If this trajectory continues, the US risks falling behind in global scientific advancements. While lawsuits and public outcry may slow down these attacks, the damage being done is significant. Without intervention, scientific progress—and the future of American innovation—could be set back for decades.
