Asher Watkins, a 52-year-old Texas rancher and experienced big game hunter, died after being fatally struck by a Cape buffalo during a hunting safari in South Africa’s Limpopo Province on Sunday, August 3.
The incident was confirmed by Coenraad Vermaak Safaris (CV Safaris), which stated that Watkins was tracking a buffalo alongside a professional hunter and a tracker when the animal suddenly attacked. According to the company, the buffalo was unwounded at the time of the encounter.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm the tragic death of our client and friend, Asher Watkins, from the United States,” said Hans Vermaak in a statement. “While on a hunting safari with us in Limpopo Province, Asher was fatally injured in a sudden and unprovoked attack by a Cape buffalo.”
The safari operator described the incident as devastating for everyone involved and emphasized that support is being provided to Watkins’ family members both in South Africa and in the United States.
“This is a deeply traumatic event,” Vermaak added. “Our hearts go out to his loved ones, and we extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
