Firefighters save 25 million bees after semi breaks down in Parleys Canyon

Firefighters in Utah were called to an unusual rescue operation after a semi-truck carrying an estimated 25 million honey bees broke down while climbing Parleys Canyon.

The truck, which was transporting approximately 480 beehives, became stranded during unusually warm weather, raising concerns about the survival of the insects inside. Experts say honey bees depend on proper airflow to regulate temperatures within their hives, making prolonged exposure to direct sunlight potentially dangerous.

According to officials from the Unified Fire Authority (UFA), firefighters from the Millcreek station responded to help protect the bees while mechanics worked to repair the vehicle.

Using hoses, crews gently sprayed water over the trailer to keep temperatures down and prevent the colonies from overheating. Authorities said the operation helped keep the bees calm and stable during the delay.

The truck was reportedly carrying between 40,000 and 60,000 bees per hive, bringing the total number of insects on board to around 25 million.

Despite working in close proximity to millions of bees, firefighters completed the operation without suffering a single sting.

Officials later described the incident as a reminder that emergency responders often assist not only people, but also animals and wildlife when unexpected situations arise.

Thanks to the efforts of firefighters and mechanics, the bee colonies were able to continue their journey safely.

Honey bees play a critical role in global agriculture and food production, pollinating crops worth billions of dollars each year. Experts warn that protecting bee populations is essential for maintaining food security, sustainable farming and healthy ecosystems. As concerns grow over habitat loss, climate change and declining pollinator numbers, incidents like this highlight the importance of conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding one of the world’s most valuable agricultural resources.
