Tortoise Found Alive After Spending Nearly A Decade Trapped Beneath House Floor

A tortoise discovered beneath the floor of a family home in Brazil has returned to the wild after undergoing months of rehabilitation, in a survival story that has astonished wildlife experts and animal lovers alike.

The red-footed tortoise, later named Donatello by rescuers, was found in February 2025 during renovation work at a house in the town of Itacajá, in Brazil’s Tocantins state.

Homeowners initially called a contractor to investigate what they believed was a water leak beneath the floor. As workers removed sections of the flooring, they made a remarkable discovery: a live tortoise trapped in a hidden cavity beneath the house.

The family suspected the animal may have become trapped during major renovations carried out approximately 10 years earlier.

Despite spending years in darkness with extremely limited access to food and water, Donatello was still alive when rescuers arrived.

Wildlife specialists from the Nature Institute of Tocantins (Naturatins) transferred the tortoise to a rehabilitation center, where veterinarians conducted a full health assessment. Although the reptile was under unusual circumstances for many years, experts found that his size and overall condition were surprisingly good.

The tortoise underwent treatment for shell deformities and was gradually reintroduced to normal environmental conditions, including natural light exposure and a proper diet.

Specialists also monitored his ability to interact with other tortoises, an important step before any potential release back into the wild.

After more than six months of rehabilitation, Donatello successfully regained his strength, adapted to outdoor conditions and displayed normal behavior for his species.

Conservation officials eventually released him into a suitable natural habitat alongside other tortoises, giving him the opportunity to live freely for the first time in years.

Biologists believe the reptile’s slow metabolism played a crucial role in his survival. Tortoises are capable of conserving energy for extended periods and can significantly reduce their metabolic activity during challenging environmental conditions.

While many questions remain about exactly how Donatello survived for so long beneath the floor, wildlife experts describe his recovery as an extraordinary example of the resilience of reptiles and the importance of wildlife rescue and rehabilitation programs.

Wildlife rehabilitation centers play a critical role in rescuing injured, displaced and endangered animals by providing veterinary care, habitat restoration support and species recovery programs. Conservation experts say reptiles are among the world’s most misunderstood animals, yet they are essential to healthy ecosystems. Growing investment in biodiversity conservation, wildlife protection initiatives and environmental education programs continues to improve survival outcomes for vulnerable species around the globe.
