A Foster Puppy Shyly Asked Permission to Cuddle With a Much Bigger Dog — and Got It

Bringing a foster puppy into a home with an established dog can go either way. In this particular household, there was never any real doubt — though the puppy, understandably, didn’t know that yet.

The Cuddle That Took Some Courage

In a video shared by Mike Brown on his account @cactustherescue, a tiny foster puppy named Cowboy wants to nap alongside Cactus, a much larger rescue dog. He clearly isn’t sure how it’ll go over.

Cowboy starts a few cautious steps from the bed and stops to think about it. He glances back at Brown, as if checking whether this is allowed, then finally works up the nerve to climb in. A small, uncertain tail wag follows as he settles beside the much bigger dog.

Then Cactus makes his answer clear: he shifts, turns his head, and rests it along Cowboy’s body while the puppy curls up next to him. That single moment has drawn more than 2.2 million likes.

Why Cowboy Needed This More Than Most Puppies

Here’s the context that makes the clip land differently: Brown was fostering both Cowboy and his mother, Honey. But Honey has been undergoing treatment for heartworm disease — which meant she couldn’t nurse while on medication and had to be separated from her puppies, moving to a different foster home during treatment. Cowboy’s siblings were adopted out, leaving him without his mother, his littermates, or the constant physical contact a puppy that age would normally be getting.

That’s the gap Cactus appears to have stepped into. In earlier videos, Brown captured Cactus repeatedly checking on Cowboy while he slept, moving closer, and trying to cuddle — at one point getting reminded by Brown to let the baby sleep, and another time to be gentle when he nearly rolled onto the much smaller puppy.

Cactus Was Never the Hesitant One

If Cowboy was worried about acceptance, Cactus made the answer obvious almost immediately. In another clip, Cactus leads Brown down the hallway straight to Cowboy’s pen, barking, grumbling, and dropping into a play bow — essentially demanding the puppy be let out. “Where’s the baby?” Brown asks, and Cactus has plenty to say about it.

Cowboy literally reminded me of a newly hatched sea turtle heading towards the ocean as he clumsily walked over to Cactus 🤣

Once Cowboy is free, Cactus disappears for a moment, then comes racing back with a toy in his mouth. Brown and Cactus had recently taught Cowboy how to play tug, and the puppy has been getting steady practice with his favorite instructor ever since.

Cactus has also taken on a more practical big-brother role: when it came time to introduce Cowboy to the backyard for the first time, the grass was taller than the puppy and the step down required an actual leap. Cactus went first, and Cowboy followed.

He Doesn’t Have to Leave

Viewers spent weeks openly campaigning for the obvious outcome — “cough foster fail cough cough,” as one commenter put it — and Brown eventually confirmed it: Cowboy is staying permanently. He and Cactus will be brothers for good.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does “foster fail” actually mean? It’s an affectionate term in rescue circles for when someone fostering an animal temporarily ends up adopting them permanently — technically a “failure” to hand the animal off, but widely considered the happiest possible outcome.

Why couldn’t Cowboy’s mother stay with him during treatment? Heartworm treatment medication makes it unsafe for a mother dog to nurse her puppies, so separation during the treatment period is a standard veterinary precaution rather than a choice made by the foster family.

Is it normal for an adult dog to take on a caretaking role with an unrelated puppy? It’s not universal, but it’s well documented — some adult dogs respond to a young puppy’s social signals with protective, tolerant, or nurturing behavior, particularly when the puppy is clearly dependent and non-threatening, as in Cowboy’s case.
