A Woman Befriends a Wild Crane Who Won’t Stop Knocking on Her Door

“He knocks persistently … he’s so loud” 😂

A large lake with plenty of wildlife lives peacefully in one Florida community. Autumn Cochella and her neighbors enjoy throwing out seed for everyone. While feeding birds isn’t required, it can be beneficial depending on the season, and it’s never been an issue before – until Carl.

While most of the birds in the neighborhood are satisfied to just wait for bird seed to appear, Carl is an exception. He’s a sharp, bossy crane who knows which families feed the birds, so instead of waiting for them, he does it himself.

AUTUMN COCHELLA

Carl stood out from the other birds from the start, and despite his large personality, the duo immediately became friends.

“I was in the rear of the house in my bedroom the first time I learned Carl knew his name, and I observed him walking from my backyard to the front,” Cochella explained. “‘Hey Carl!’ I cried out my bedroom window, and he dashed to my front door!” That’s when I knew we were going to be buddies.”

Carl now visits Cochella’s house every day to ask for food — and he’s not bashful about it.

Instead of simply waiting in the yard, Carl will aggressively knock on the door or the Ring camera, attempting to grab Cochella’s attention. He’ll attempt several times a day, and Cochella and her insistent bird friend have had numerous vocal spats about it.

“He bangs continuously if the other birds gobble up all of the morning seed before he gets to it,” Cochella explained. “When we’re at home, he scares the snot out of us because he’s so noisy.” I ask him to leave through the Ring cam because I’m scared he’ll smash my glass door one of these days!”

Carl has a unique personality, and while his continuous requests for food might be bothersome, Cochella adores him and is overjoyed to have made such a fun, funny buddy.
