A few months ago, Keighley Eryn Card experienced a typical commute home from work that would soon take an unexpected turn. Little did she know that her routine trip to the bus stop would lead to a life-changing encounter with a tiny, abandoned kitten begging for someone to take him in.
As Card stood waiting for her bus, she suddenly heard high-pitched cries for help emanating from a nearby bush. Intrigued and concerned, she approached the source of the sound. To her surprise, a tiny kitten emerged, meowing plaintively and tugging at her heartstrings.
“He was mewing from the bush, and I kind of mewed back at him because I didn’t know where it was coming from,” Card recounted. “He came out instantly, purring and rubbing up on my ankles.”
Although uncertain about the kitten’s circumstances, Card couldn’t ignore the undeniable connection forming between them. She contemplated whether the kitten might have a family nearby or if someone on the campus where she worked owned him.
“I wasn’t sure if his mom was coming back or if he belonged to someone on the campus I worked at,” Card said. “I remember thinking about him that night, hoping he was OK.”
The next day, Card returned to the bus stop, half-expecting the kitten to have disappeared. To her delight, not only was he still there, but he seemed even more eager to join her. The decisive moment arrived when the kitten attempted to follow her onto the bus.
“He actually was trying to follow me onto the bus,” Card said. “That’s when I was like, ‘OK, this kitty is choosing me, and I can’t leave him.’”
With a newfound feline friend in tow, Card named him Jasper and embarked on a heartwarming journey of companionship. At home, Jasper’s initial fear transformed into curiosity as he explored his new surroundings.
“When I got home, he was curious and checking out all of the new hiding places,” Card said.
Thanks to the support of her neighbors, Card swiftly gathered essentials for Jasper, including food and a litter box. Despite being a first-time cat owner, she embraced the responsibility with enthusiasm.
“I set him up in my bathroom and kept him there for a couple of days, and he adjusted really fast!” Card said. “His personality went from scared little kitty to fearless, curious kitty who hides and ambushes me from across the room.”
Months have passed since Card rescued Jasper, and the once-small, frightened kitten has blossomed into a healthy, confident companion. Jasper now rules Card’s home with a sense of ownership and gratitude for his newfound life.
“He definitely thinks he owns the place,” Card chuckled.
For Card, Jasper’s presence has been a transformative adventure, challenging and changing her preconceived notions about cats.
“Jasper has definitely changed my view on cats!” Card exclaimed. “I grew up only having dogs, thinking I didn’t like cats, really. But I realized that I love cats and just needed to find the one I was compatible with to give them a chance!”
