The sight is distressing. A resident expressed, “The situation is worsening,” highlighting the escalating heaps of waste accumulating outside a residence in California.
In the Fairfax neighborhood of Los Angeles, a residence has become the epicenter of numerous complaints from its neighbors. Concerned voices resonate over the sight of the property adorned with towering piles of trash bags, as reported by ABC affiliate KABC and NBC affiliate KNBC.
Aerial imagery captured by both media outlets reveals a startling scene – a landscape marred by what seems like countless plastic bags filled with refuse, stacked several feet high across the front and rear patios of the dwelling.
“The situation is worsening,” remarked Marlon Azurda to KNBC, echoing the sentiments of other locals who expressed their dismay. “It’s been accumulating slowly,” mentioned another resident to KABC, describing the unsettling sight in comparison to the surrounding environment.
According to accounts from residents, this issue is not new. As far back as 2016, the owners of the property faced fines for the persistent accumulation of garbage, as confirmed by the Department of Building and Safety, KNBC reported.
“The outside of the property needs to be cleaned, for sure,” voiced another concerned neighbor to KABC, underscoring the necessity for immediate action.
Beyond the eyesore, fears loom over potential hazards. Concerns about fire risks, along with the possibility of rodent and insect infestations stemming from the trash piles, are causing distress among the community, as detailed by KNBC.
Moreover, there are apprehensions about the impact on property values and the neighborhood’s appeal to prospective buyers. Quincy Anderson, speaking to the outlet, emphasized, “The homes here are worth a lot of money [for these people] to convert it into a dumping ground.”
Prompted by mounting concerns, the office of council member Katy Yaroslavsky was contacted on Monday regarding the issue. In response, a statement was issued to KABC, acknowledging the residents’ growing unease and pledging action.
“I am aware of the situation at the home near Martel and Melrose Ave, and have directed my team to work with the appropriate City and County Departments to resolve the issue with urgency,” Yaroslavsky stated. She added, “Private property owners have a responsibility to maintain public health standards, and we will make sure those laws are upheld.”
