The Incredible Illusion of the ‘Underwater Waterfall’ of Mauritius

Mauritius is a small island nation located in the Indian Ocean, known for its breathtaking beaches, coral reefs, and clear waters. However, there is one natural wonder that stands out above the rest – the incredible ‘underwater waterfall’ phenomenon that can be seen off the southwestern tip of the island.

This illusion is created by the runoff of sand and silt deposits being dragged away by the water that flows between the opening in the reefs, known as La Passe. When viewed from above, the sand and silt create the impression of an underwater waterfall that seems to be flowing into the deep blue sea.

Even satellite views of the area are equally mesmerizing, with the vortex of the ‘waterfall’ appearing as a dramatic underwater spiral off the coast of Mauritius.

Le Morne Brabant, a basaltic monolith, towers high above the island, with its summit rising 556 m (1,824 ft) above sea level. This area, known as the Le Morne Cultural Landscape, is recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

The mountain has a significant historical significance as well, as in the 18th and early 19th centuries, runaway slaves formed small settlements in the caves and on the summit of the rugged mountain. These runaway slaves, known as ‘maroons’, have made Le Morne a symbol of the slaves’ fight for freedom, their suffering, and their sacrifice. As an important stopover in the eastern slave trade, Mauritius was even known as the ‘Maroon republic’ because of the large number of escaped slaves who lived on the mountain.

Recently, videographer ReubenMRU captured stunning footage of the ‘underwater waterfall’ and Le Morne Brabant using his drone. The aerial views showcase the beauty of the island and the natural wonder that has captured the imagination of people from all over the world.

The ‘underwater waterfall’ phenomenon is a testament to the power of nature, and the importance of preserving these natural wonders for generations to come. Whether viewed from above or below, it is a breathtaking sight that should not be missed by anyone visiting Mauritius.
