Farm Workers Accused of Abusing Cows at Award-Winning Dairy Supplying Tesco and Müller

Terrifying undercover footage has exposed alleged animal abuse at an award-winning dairy farm in Essex that supplies milk to major retailers including Tesco and Müller, leading to the dismissal of several employees and an ongoing investigation.

According to the investigation, workers at Albyns Farm near Loughton were filmed repeatedly kicking, punching and slapping dairy cows, while some allegedly jabbed them with sharp objects, twisted their tails, and shouted aggressively to force them to move. In one particularly disturbing incident, a worker appeared to press a lit cigarette against a cow’s face.

The footage, secretly recorded by animal rights investigator Joey Carbstrong, reportedly captured around 600 alleged incidents of unnecessary cruelty across two separate recording periods between 2024 and 2026.

Workers at Albyns Farm, near Loughton in Essex, have been accused of multiple breaches of animal welfare rules

Investigators also documented calves being separated from their mothers shortly after birth and, in some cases, dragged by their legs. Other footage allegedly showed cows being struck with gates and brooms, causing visible fear and distress.

Animal welfare specialist Jenny Mace, a visiting scholar at the University of St Andrews, reviewed the recordings and said many animals displayed clear signs of pain and fear, including flinching, attempts to escape, kicking, bellowing and panic.

Following the release of the footage, both Tesco and Müller suspended the farm from their supply chains while investigations continue. Several employees identified in the recordings were dismissed immediately.

Workers were recorded punching cows, prodding them with sharp objects and slapping them with cloths, leaving them terrified

The owners of Albyns Farm said they were “extremely disappointed” by the behavior shown in the footage, stressing that it did not reflect the farm’s standards. They announced an independent investigation, additional animal welfare audits, expanded CCTV monitoring, and enhanced staff training.

Müller stated it has zero tolerance for animal cruelty, while Tesco reaffirmed that all suppliers are expected to meet strict animal welfare standards and said any breaches are treated seriously.

The investigation has renewed concerns about the effectiveness of routine farm welfare inspections and whether existing auditing systems are sufficient to detect abuse before it occurs.

Around 600 alleged incidents were recorded in two hour-long videos, taken in 2024 and 2026

Caring for Farm Animals Matters

Farm animals depend entirely on the people responsible for their care. Humane handling not only reduces stress and suffering but also supports healthier animals, better food production, and more ethical farming practices. Animal welfare experts say proper staff training, regular monitoring, and transparent inspections are essential to preventing cruelty and ensuring livestock are treated with dignity throughout their lives.
