In a bizarre incident, a man has been arrested in Peru after being caught with an 800-year-old mummy that he kept as his “spiritual girlfriend.” The remains were discovered in a cooler bag by police who were patrolling a park in the city of Puno.
The man, identified as 26-year-old Julio Cesar Bermejo, told local media that the mummy had been brought home by his father some 30 years ago. He referred to the mummy as “Juanita” and claimed that it was his “spiritual girlfriend.” Bermejo further explained that he takes care of Juanita and even sleeps with her in his room.
The mummy is believed to be an adult male from the same region of Peru, according to the Ministry of Culture. Specialists from the ministry also revealed that the mummy was not Juanita as the man had referred to it, but rather a male who was over 45 years old.
The mummy was discovered in the fetal position inside a delivery cooler bag and has since been taken into custody by the ministry, which has deemed it a national cultural asset. Bermejo denied any intention of selling the remains, claiming that he only had it in a cooler bag at the park because his friends wanted to see it.
Bermejo is now in police detention while the authorities investigate the case. This unusual incident has shocked the local community, and people are expressing concern over the handling of cultural heritage and the protection of ancient artifacts.
