Man Devotes His Life To Adopting Old Dogs Who Can’t Find Forever Homes

When Steve Greig lost his 12-year-old dog, Wolfgang, in a tragic accident, he was devastated. But instead of succumbing to grief, he embarked on a heartwarming mission to adopt the oldest, most overlooked dogs from shelters. Over the years, Steve has provided love and care to dozens of senior dogs, transforming his Denver home into a haven for animals that would otherwise face euthanasia. This is his story—a testament to compassion, resilience, and the profound bond between humans and their pets.

The Turning Point: Wolfgang’s Legacy

The passing of Wolfgang in 2012 left a void in Steve’s life. Struggling to move on, he decided to honor Wolfgang’s memory by adopting another dog. His choice? Eeyore, a senior Chihuahua with knee problems and a heart murmur. This decision not only saved Eeyore’s life but also gave Steve a new purpose.

Over the past decade, Steve Greig has adopted dozens of disabled and elderly dogs, hoping to give them the happiest end-of-life experience possible. In this photo, Greig poses with his pets in June. (@wolfgang2242)

“It was immediately healing. I could tell it was exactly what I needed to do,” Steve shared.

A Home for the Unadoptable: Senior Dog Haven

Older dogs are often overlooked at shelters due to health issues and shorter lifespans. Steve, however, sees their value and beauty. His home now houses 11 senior dogs, each with unique needs and personalities. From heart disease to blindness, these dogs receive love, care, and a chance to live their golden years with dignity.

  • Current Pack Members: Loretta (19 years old), Raylene (8 years old), and Mr. Magoo are just a few of the cherished names in Steve’s household.
  • Beyond Dogs: Steve also cares for a pig named Bikini, chickens, rabbits, a duck, and a turkey, proving that love knows no bounds.

Life with Senior Dogs: Challenges and Rewards

Managing a household of senior pets requires meticulous planning. Medications, feeding schedules, and regular vet visits are part of Steve’s daily routine. Despite the challenges, he emphasizes the joy they bring.

“Being in bed with all those warm dogs, it’s just the best thing in the world,” Steve says.

Group activities like movie nights and car rides keep the dogs entertained, while one-on-one time ensures each pet feels special.

Spreading the Message: Inspiring Others to Adopt Seniors

Through his popular Instagram account (@wolfgang2242), Steve shares glimpses of his life with his furry family, inspiring over 1 million followers. His story has motivated countless individuals to consider adopting senior pets.

“Once you adopt a senior, you fall in love with them,” Steve explains.

Beyond Social Media: Advocacy and Education

In 2019, Steve co-authored a children’s book, “The One and Only Wolfgang,” with Mary Rand Hess. The book encourages readers to value senior animals and appreciate their unique qualities.

“Old is as good as new if you have somebody that loves you,” he says.

The Bigger Picture: Advocating for Senior Pets

Steve’s efforts are supported by rescue organizations like True & Faithful Pet Rescue Mission, which saves hundreds of senior dogs annually. Together, they aim to change perceptions about adopting older pets and ensure these animals receive the love they deserve.

Steve Greig’s journey is a poignant reminder that compassion can heal even the deepest wounds. By opening his heart and home to senior dogs, he has not only honored Wolfgang’s memory but also given countless animals a second chance at life. His message is simple yet profound: every life matters, no matter the age.
