It was a sight that initially sent chills down the spines of residents in Eureka, Illinois. As autumn arrived, and Halloween decorations adorned the neighborhood, Eric Lind and his neighbors were taken aback by an ominous figure soaring through the sky on a broomstick. Little did they know that what they witnessed would turn out to be an adorable surprise.
Lind’s mother received a call from a concerned neighbor, urging her to look outside in the backyard. Curiosity piqued, she glanced out the window and noticed an object descending into a pine tree. As she focused her gaze, she was astonished by what she discovered.
“She spotted an owl,” Lind recounted. “And saw that it was carrying a stick horse.”
The hungry owl had snatched a toy stick horse from a nearby backyard. While unable to consume its newfound treasure, the owl proudly flew around the neighborhood, showcasing its prize to onlookers.
Lind and his family delighted in observing the owl gracefully glide through the sky, holding onto the horse toy, until it eventually departed the area.
“He flew from the pine tree to a nearby power pole,” Lind described. “And then he took off across the neighborhood.”
To share this peculiar yet amusing sighting, Lind posted a video of the owl on Facebook, alerting his neighbors to the unexpected visitor. The responses flooded in, aligning with the Halloween season and drawing comparisons between the owl and a witch.
“There have been lots of references to Halloween and Harry Potter,” Lind acknowledged.
However, the owl that briefly enchanted Lind’s neighborhood wasn’t merely a temporary guest. According to Lind, it belongs to a family of owls that has made the area their home for the past six months.
“We watch them fly from tree to tree, sometimes swooping down to investigate something on the ground,” Lind revealed.
During the summer, the owls provided constant entertainment for Lind’s family. But nothing compared to the gasps and laughter they inspired during the autumn months. Although the owl has since abandoned its stick horse, Lind and his family eagerly anticipate more mysterious and enchanting surprises in the future.
