Pregnant diver jumps into the ocean to help injured dolphin — and the dolphin appeared to understand every moment

What began as an ordinary day off the coast of Los Angeles turned into an extraordinary encounter between humans and one distressed marine mammal when pregnant diver Nicole Isaacs made a split-second decision that has since captivated millions online.

Isaacs was out at sea when a dolphin approached her boat and, unusually, refused to leave. The animal’s behaviour immediately suggested something was wrong. Looking closer, Isaacs spotted deep, bloody wounds along the dolphin’s body.

The cause was shocking: two remoras, commonly known as suckerfish, had attached themselves directly to the dolphin’s injured flesh.

Under normal circumstances, remoras are relatively harmless hitchhikers, clinging to sharks, whales, or dolphins for transportation and scraps of food. But in this case, Isaacs realised the fish were attached to open wounds, worsening the dolphin’s suffering. According to her account, the animal appeared to be convulsing in pain.

Despite being pregnant, Isaacs faced a remarkable choice.

“Should I get in with him?” she reportedly asked her companion.

Then she entered the water.

What followed was captured on video and later shared on her TikTok account, where it quickly drew millions of views.

@nicoleisaacsofficial the most insane day of my life on the ocean. I trusted my instincts and did what I thought was right, and I’m glad I did. I don’t advocate to touch wild animals but I do think some circumstances are necessary and ok. It was very clear this dolphin was struggling and in a lot of pain, and based on her reaction afterwards as well as the entire pod, I know I made the right decision. Dolphins are incredible animals and so intelligent—the fact that this also happened while pregnant was once in a lifetime 🩵🙏🏽✨🥹🐬 #dolphins #wilddolphins #wildliferescue #dolphin #fyp ♬ You Make Me Feel Good – Original Mix – Satin Jackets

As Isaacs and another woman approached, the dolphin did something astonishing: it rolled over and remained still, seemingly allowing the divers to help.

“She began to fully cooperate and turn over for us to make it easy to grab the remoras,” Isaacs explained in the video.

While they worked, the rest of the dolphin’s pod stayed nearby, circling at a distance as if watching.

Removing the remoras proved far more difficult than expected. The fish were slippery, fast, and repeatedly reattached themselves. At one point, Isaacs successfully removed one and attempted to hand it off to the boat’s captain, only for it to slip free and latch onto her instead.

“I was pregnant and freaking out,” she later recalled.

Eventually, after several attempts, both remoras were removed.

The dolphin’s reaction was immediate.

According to Isaacs, the animal leapt from the water, and moments later the surrounding pod returned in full, swimming energetically around the boat.

“All of the dolphins reappeared out of nowhere and swam around us to celebrate,” she wrote.

Though wildlife experts generally discourage direct human interaction with wild marine animals unless absolutely necessary, Isaacs said the severity of the dolphin’s condition made intervention feel unavoidable.

She later described the rescue as “the most insane day” of her life on the ocean.

For many viewers, the most powerful part of the story was not simply the rescue itself, but the apparent trust shown by the injured dolphin — an animal in visible distress choosing to remain still while strangers tried to help.

In a vast and unpredictable ocean, where survival often depends on instinct alone, one wounded dolphin appeared to place its faith in human compassion — and one woman, despite her own vulnerability, chose to answer. Whether seen as instinct, intelligence, or desperation, the encounter offered a rare and unforgettable glimpse into the fragile bridge that can exist between species when suffering is met with courage.
