Photographer captures astonishing moment weasel rides on the back of a flying woodpecker

A wildlife photographer in London captured an extraordinary split-second moment that left the internet stunned: a tiny weasel clinging to the back of a flying green woodpecker in what appeared to be a desperate mid-air struggle for survival.

The remarkable image was taken by photographer Martin Le-May during a walk through Hornchurch Country Park, where he suddenly noticed frantic movement in the distance.

At first glance, the scene looked almost unbelievable — a small mammal seemingly riding a bird through the sky.

But experts say the reality was far more dramatic.

According to wildlife specialists, the animal gripping the bird was a least weasel, one of the world’s smallest carnivores and a surprisingly fearless predator despite weighing little more than a chocolate bar.

The weasel had reportedly attempted to attack the Eurasian green woodpecker, likely hoping to make the much larger bird its next meal.

To escape, the terrified woodpecker launched itself into flight — but the predator refused to let go.

Wildlife author Gerard Gorman explained that green woodpeckers usually flee toward tree cover or take to the air when threatened.

Seeing a weasel involved in such an encounter, however, is considered extremely unusual.

Experts believe the bird’s ability to stay airborne was only possible because the attacking weasel appeared to be relatively young and lightweight.

Eventually, after the pair landed, the woodpecker managed to seize a brief moment of distraction and escaped unharmed.

The hungry weasel, meanwhile, was left empty-handed.

The photograph quickly spread across the internet because it captured something rarely witnessed in nature: the raw intensity of survival combined with an image so strange it almost looked staged.

For many viewers, the moment perfectly illustrated how unpredictable and dramatic wildlife encounters can be — even in ordinary public parks.

Why rare wildlife photographs fascinate millions online

Wildlife photography continues attracting massive global audiences because it captures authentic moments humans rarely witness firsthand. Extraordinary animal encounters often spread rapidly online, especially when they reveal unexpected predator behavior, survival instincts or unusual interactions between species.
