The Dark Hedges (Na Fálta Dorcha) is an avenue of beech trees in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. The trees form an atmospheric tunnel, creating a captivating sight that has been used as a location in several TV shows. Most notably, the Dark Hedges was featured in the hit series Game of Thrones, which has significantly boosted its popularity as a tourist destination.

The avenue’s origins date back to 1775. James Stuart, a local landowner, planted 150 beech trees along the entrance road to his estate. His intention was to create an imposing approach, leaving a grand first impression on visitors.

Over time, the trees have grown into a magnificent archway, their branches intertwining overhead to form a natural tunnel. This atmospheric setting has captured the imagination of many, and local legend adds another layer of intrigue to The Dark Hedges.

The legend speaks of a ghost known as the Grey Lady. She is said to haunt the road, flitting from tree to tree. There are several theories about her identity. Some believe she is the spirit of James Stuart’s daughter, nicknamed “Cross Peggy.” Others claim she is a former maid who met an untimely demise within the house. Another possibility suggests she’s a spirit from an abandoned graveyard beneath the nearby fields. On Halloween night, legend says the Grey Lady is joined by other spectral figures from the graveyard, making for a truly spooky spectacle.

Whether you’re drawn by the enchanting scenery, the connection to Game of Thrones, or the captivating local legend, The Dark Hedges (Na Fálta Dorcha) is a unique and unforgettable landmark in Northern Ireland.
