The incredible escape of an octopus from a New Zealand aquarium

A very intelligent octopus escaped from his prison at New Zealand’s National Aquarium, made his way directly to the water, and is now free to wander the Pacific. When the aquarium personnel came to check on the octopus, there was nothing they could do but try to figure out how it got away.

Inky, a typical New Zealand octopus, took advantage of a small breach in his water tank, then likely dislodged the cover and exited his home. He kept traveling after he was on the floor until he located a drain hole with a diameter of less than 6 inches and a length of 165 feet. Despite being the size of a soccer ball, Inky squeezed his way all the way down to the sea via the conduit. The aquarium employees, on the other hand, were not astonished when Inky bolted!

“Octopuses are well-known escape artists,” said National Aquarium manager Rob Yarrall. “However, Inky put himself in a position to test the waters here. I don’t believe he was unhappy or lonely because octopuses are solitary creatures. But he’s such an inquisitive young man. He’d be curious about what’s going on outside. That’s simply his demeanor.”

Inky has earned the right to live free after staging the impossible escape, therefore the aquarium will not begin a search expedition for the clever octopus. Yarrall even made a joke about his escape. “He made his way to one of the drain tunnels that lead back to the water and took off,” Yarral added. “However, my coworkers and I have been disappointed because he didn’t even leave us a message.” But then, this is Inky, and he’s always been a bit of a shocker.”

As previously said, the entire team is convinced that Inky’s escape has nothing to do with the fact that he may have been sad or uncomfortable. They claim he was motivated by curiosity. And, even though it’s unlikely, they think Inky will be welcomed back with open arms if he wishes to return. Inky’s escape was described by James Wood, a marine researcher, as “none of this is shocking or abnormal of octopus behavior.” “Octopuses are incredible animals with a high level of intelligence.”

Another octopus became viral a few years ago after he somehow escaped from a boat through a tiny hole. Here’s where you can catch up on the action:
