4,000 beagles have been rescued following a seven-month probe into a research facility in Virginia. The goal now is to transport every dog to a shelter throughout America, care for them, and find them a home where they will be secure and loved.
Beagles were being bred at Envigo RMS in Cumberland, Virginia, for use in pharmaceutical research and testing, and they were being kept in “horrendous conditions,” according to PETA, where they were being malnourished, unwell, and abused.
According to Daphna Nachminovitch, senior vice president of Cruelty Investigations at PETA, “PETA’s groundbreaking undercover investigation helped spark a historic domino effect of state and federal legislative and law-enforcement action that paved the way for these dogs’ independence and this dog prison’s closure.” The chance to have what every dog deserves—the freedom to live life, affection, and respect for their individuality as members of a family home—will soon be provided to Envigo’s surviving victims, it has been announced.
The Humane Society of the United States was eventually given a transfer plan on July 9 to remove the 4,000 remaining beagles from Envigo after a year of investigations. Therefore, efforts have been made to find space in shelters around the United States to keep all of these creatures. Sending dogs to states like Texas, Wyoming, and California entails doing this. According to John Ramer, executive director of the Wyoming-based Kindness Ranch Animal Sanctuary, “it’s one of the most challenging rescues I’ve ever heard of or had the honor to be involved in.”
“I can tap a dog on the head, give him a hug, and reassure him that everything will be OK when I bring him out of a facility. However, 4,000 canines pulled out is an unbelievable quantity.
A shelter near the original Cumberland research facility called Homeward Trails Animal Rescue has already taken in hundreds of beagles, but they are currently concentrating their efforts on housing pregnant dogs and puppies because they are more difficult to transport safely. Wherever there is room, adult dogs will probably be dispersed around the United States. All of these animals will be given medical attention and spayed or neutered before adoption. However, it is hoped that each of these rescued dogs can soon find a better life with a caring family.
4,000 beagles that were rescued from a Virginia research facility are now being moved to shelters all over the country and are being offered for adoption.
