Ticks in Dogs: Check Everywhere

A dog groomer’s recent Facebook post has gone viral after she shared a photo of a tick attached to the gum of her dog’s tooth. The post has raised awareness of the dangers of ticks and the importance of checking dogs thoroughly for pests.

Ticks are small, blood-sucking parasites that can carry a variety of diseases, including Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever, and anaplasmosis. Ticks can attach to dogs anywhere on their bodies, but they are most commonly found in areas with thin skin, such as the ears, neck, and groin.

In the dog groomer’s post, she warns other pet owners to check their dogs everywhere for ticks, including in their mouths. Ticks can be difficult to spot, especially in furry dogs, so it is important to take your time and check your dog carefully.

If you find a tick on your dog, remove it immediately using a tick remover or tweezers. Be sure to grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible and pull it straight out. Do not twist or crush the tick, as this can release its blood and saliva, which can transmit diseases.

After removing the tick, clean the bite area with soap and water. Monitor your dog for signs of illness, such as fever, lethargy, and lameness. If you notice any of these signs, contact your veterinarian immediately.

Here are some tips for checking your dog for ticks:

  • Use a tick comb to brush through your dog’s fur.
  • Check your dog’s ears, neck, groin, and armpits carefully.
  • Lift up your dog’s fur and look for ticks on their skin.
  • Be sure to check your dog’s mouth and between their teeth.

If you find a tick on your dog, remove it immediately and clean the bite area. Monitor your dog for signs of illness and contact your veterinarian if you have any concerns.
