It’s always heartbreaking when dogs are abandoned, but it was an especially shocking situation for a dog named Buddy: the old dog was left outside a shelter after hours on the hottest day of the year.
According to a Facebook post from Fort Bend County Animal Services, a woman left a senior dog, estimated to be between 12 and 14 years old, outside the shelter during after hours.
The shelter has a sign prohibiting people from leaving animals on their property during off hours, but she did it anyway, leaving the dog alone outside in the scorching heat. Temperatures in the area reached 109 degrees, tying for the all-time hottest day on record.

“Yesterday was literally the hottest day on record,” one commenter on Facebook wrote. “I pray Buddy finds someone BETTER and am utterly disgusted.”
Fort Bend County Animal Services said that the dog had an unregistered microchip that was sold to a local rescue, and they are trying to find out more information. They named the dog Buddy, after the microchip company BuddyID.
The shelter wrote that their first concern is Buddy and “making sure that he finds a loving and secure home,” but they are also seeking information from the woman who left him there: they shared security cam photos of the woman and her vehicle.
The shelter acknowledged that the woman is not necessarily guilty of abandonment: it’s possible that she found a dog as a stray and was just trying to get him to the safety of a shelter. Either way, Fort Bend County Animal Services wants to talk to her for more information.
It isn’t clear when Buddy will be available for adoption, but we’re sure the shelter will post updates about his status.
