Woman Checks Shelter Adoption Site and Finds Her Dog Who Disappeared Two Years Ago

A Pennsylvania woman has been reunited with her dog more than two years after he disappeared, following a chance discovery on a local animal shelter’s adoption website.

Aisha Nieves, from Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania, had a close bond with her pitbull-rottweiler mix, Kovu. “He was my baby. He would go with me everywhere. He would sleep in my bed,” she told WFMZ. “Literally, the definition of a man’s best friend.”

How Kovu Went Missing

In 2019, a car struck Aisha’s home in Allentown, and in the chaos that followed, Kovu disappeared.

“I found out he was gone when I came home later that day and he wasn’t there to run to me and give me kisses like he usually did,” she told The Morning Call. “I searched the whole house and couldn’t find him, then looked around Allentown for a good week or so and still couldn’t find him.”

Weeks later, Aisha learned that Kovu had actually been found and taken in by the Lehigh County Humane Society (LCHS) — but by the time she found out, he had already been adopted by another family. Believing there was little she could do, Aisha assumed her dog was gone for good.

A Chance Discovery, Two Years Later

Two years passed. Then, while scrolling through LCHS’s adoption listings, Aisha noticed a familiar face — a dog listed under the name “Ash.”

She recognized him instantly by a distinguishing mark. “He had a scar right over his right eye,” she told WFMZ. “It’s not that noticeable anymore, but in the picture they had, you could see it.”

According to LCHS director of development Deirdre Snyder, the family who had adopted Kovu in October 2019 surrendered him back to the shelter after facing possible eviction — which is how he ended up back on the adoption site where Aisha happened to see him.

The Reunion

Aisha admits she was nervous walking into the shelter, unsure whether Kovu would still remember her after two years and a different home in between.

“I was sweating. My hands started shaking. I was scared he wouldn’t remember me because it had been so long. I sat there, waiting for them to bring him out,” she said.

Any doubt disappeared the moment Kovu saw her. “He was screaming, trying to get away from the guy holding him and run to me,” Aisha said. “Then, he just jumped on me and we started kissing and hugging.”

Kovu is now back home with Aisha for good. “I love him so much, like I’m just so happy he’s back,” she told WFMZ.

Why This Kind of Reunion Is Rare

Stories like Aisha and Kovu’s are uncommon largely because of how adoption and shelter systems work: once an animal is adopted out, shelters generally have no ongoing way to track it unless it’s returned or surrendered again. Aisha’s reunion depended on a specific chain of events — Kovu being surrendered by his second family and Aisha happening to check the shelter’s listings at the right time — rather than any active search effort connecting them.

This is one of the reasons animal welfare organizations encourage pet identification methods, such as microchipping, which allow shelters to identify and contact an original owner immediately if a lost pet is ever found — without depending on chance.

Frequently Asked Questions

How did Aisha find her dog after two years? She spotted Kovu, listed under the name “Ash,” while browsing the Lehigh County Humane Society’s online adoption page, and recognized him by a scar above his right eye.

Why was Kovu back at the shelter? The family who had adopted him in 2019 surrendered him back to LCHS after facing possible eviction, which is how he became available for adoption again.

Did Kovu remember Aisha? Yes — according to Aisha, he reacted with immediate excitement when he saw her, straining to reach her before jumping on her in greeting.

What can pet owners do to prevent permanent separation like this? Microchipping and keeping shelter and municipal registration information up to date significantly increase the odds of a lost pet being matched back to its original owner.
