“I’m so glad I was there that day …”
Kristin Erwin jumped in her car as soon as she heard about a stray dog walking on a pier in Channelview, Texas.
Erwin, who frequently helps with dog rescues, was heartbroken when she arrived at the scene and discovered the nicest girl pacing the docks by herself.
Erwin hadn’t intended to bring the puppy home with her, but as soon as she saw her, she knew she couldn’t leave her behind, especially since the affectionate girl began wagging her tail and rubbing up against Erwin’s legs.
She noted that the attractive stray was not only exceedingly underweight, but also appeared to be lactating after giving her food and water. Erwin knew it could only mean one thing: pups were nearby.
She eventually found all eight of them with help from a local she met nearby.
“They were hidden in an old, decrepit, closed restaurant, right on the porch,” Erwin told The Dodo. “They were only three to four weeks old.” It was December, and the temperature was about to plummet, and I couldn’t leave them.”
Erwin couldn’t help but feel pity for the stray, eventually named Marla, who had been raising so many puppies on her own.
“She had to be fatigued and spent just keeping them alive,” Erwin remarked. “I have a soft spot for stray mama dogs, so it was very difficult for me.”
Erwin fostered Marla and her puppies for a month before moving them to another foster home until the puppies were old enough to be immunized. They gradually developed into friendly, playful canines who needed companionship. Marla and all of her kids were immediately adopted with the help of Paddy’s Paws and Misfit Mutts Dog Rescue.
Though Erwin misses Marla and her babies, she is overjoyed that she was able to find them forever homes.
“They didn’t have to be the next generation of strays,” Erwin explained. “I’m very glad I was there that day and had the opportunity to influence their future.”
