23-year old man dies after falling into a frozen pond while trying to save his dog

A quiet winter outing turned into a devastating tragedy when a 23-year-old hunter lost his life after falling through a frozen pond while attempting to rescue his dog in Clinton County, Illinois.

Anyone who has ever stepped onto thin ice knows how deceptive and dangerous it can be — solid one moment, deadly the next. But when an emergency strikes, instinct often takes over, leaving no time to calculate the risks.

That instinct proved fatal for Luke Kitterman, who was goose hunting with five friends on January 26, 2026, when his dog suddenly broke through the ice and plunged into the freezing water.

A Split-Second Decision

Without hesitation, Kitterman rushed to his dog’s aid. Crawling carefully across the fragile ice, he managed to reach the animal and pull it free on his first attempt.

But the relief was brief.

The dog slipped back into the icy pond, and when Kitterman tried again, the ice gave way beneath him. He fell through and disappeared under the surface, never to resurface.

“They were able to pull the dog out of the water and into a canoe,” said Peyton Matthews of the Illinois Department of Natural Resources Conservation Police, speaking to KSDK. “Just unfortunately lost sight of their friend.”

Desperate Search Turns Into Recovery

Kitterman’s friends immediately tried to help, but the freezing water and unstable ice made rescue impossible. First responders from multiple agencies rushed to the scene, launching an intensive search operation that began around 3 p.m. Monday.

As night fell, conditions worsened.

“With the sun going down, temperatures continued to drop,” Matthews explained. “The ice was about three inches thick… and once the temperature dropped further, the ice began freezing over the hole we had cut for divers.”

With conditions becoming increasingly dangerous, the mission was shifted from rescue to recovery.

A Heartbreaking Discovery

Search efforts resumed early Tuesday morning. Approximately 30 personnel used divers and 360-degree sonar to search the four-acre pond, which reaches depths between 18 and 34 feet.

Around 6 p.m. Tuesday, Luke Kitterman’s body was recovered.

His friends remained at the scene, devastated by the loss.

The dog — the reason for Luke’s final, selfless act — survived.

A Bond That Cost Him Everything

The story has deeply affected animal lovers across the country, serving as a painful reminder of the powerful bond between humans and their pets. In his final moments, Luke did not hesitate. He acted out of love, loyalty, and instinct — choosing his dog’s life over his own safety.

He will be remembered not just as a young hunter who loved the outdoors, but as someone whose courage and devotion defined him in his last moments.

Some acts of love are quiet. Some are heroic. And some, like Luke’s, are both — leaving behind a legacy of selflessness that will not be forgotten.
