At a Guatemalan Zoo, an Elephant Pleads For Assistance in Saving an Antelope From Drowning

A zoo visitor, Maria Isabel Diaz Ruiz de Llarena, recorded a video of an elephant crying for aid after seeing an antelope drowning at a Guatemalan zoo.

When people think about feelings like empathy and the desire to help others, they frequently think of humans. However, a video of an elephant displaying comparable sentiments has appeared on the internet. A zoo visitor, Maria Isabel Diaz Ruiz de Llarena, recorded a video of a vigilant elephant crying for help after seeing an antelope drowning at a Guatemalan zoo.

The elephant observed an antelope fighting to keep afloat in the water at La Aurora Zoo in Guatemala City, according to a Facebook video. The antelope’s horns appeared at the pool’s surface as it struggled to keep afloat. After spotting an antelope suffering in a swimming pool, the elephant trumpeted. Trompita, the elephant, even appeared to offer his trunk to pull the antelope out of the pool. The elephant’s trumpeting eventually drew the attention of the zookeeper, who dashed into the water and pulled the antelope safely out.

“Today I was lucky to witness something really lovely, an elephant seemed anxious to warn that an antelope was drowning, in the end it was rescued by a brave worker,” Maria Isabel Diaz Ruiz de Llarena captioned the video.

Trompita appeared to feel pity for the antelope, according to zoo physician Alejandro Striedinger, who shared an enclosure with these animals. The antelope were not in danger, according to Alejandro Striedinger, because the pool contains islands and shallow areas where the animals may get out on their own. According to The DailyMail, he described the moment in which the elephant attempted to save the antelope as “really lovely,” and noted that Trompita is 60 years old and has been living in the Guatemalan zoo for 14 years. According to Alejandro Striedinger, Trompita was rescued from a local circus where she was forced to perform routines.
