Take A Flying Train Ride Through Germany In 1902 With Amazingly Restored and Revitalized Footage

A YouTuber has upscaled a movie from 1902 portraying a journey aboard the German ‘Flying Train’ into magnificent 2021 detail from the vaults of The Museum of Modern Art. The train, which is still in use today, takes you on a virtual tour of what is now Wuppertal, allowing you to experience life in the early 1900s as if you were there.

The material obtained is of significant significance to historians, who seldom have a film as comprehensive as this one, which captures stunning vistas of horse-and-carriages, children playing in the streets, and the River Wupper.

Denis Shiryaev, a YouTuber who is well-known for colorizing and upscaling historical film to provide a current peek into life experienced long ago, changed the remarkable footage. Denis is the founder and CEO of neural.love, a startup that uses neural networks and artificial intelligence to improve video quality and smoothness. The Apollo 16 Lunar Rover ‘Grand Prix,’ as well as different travels through towns between 1890 and 1930, are examples of notable film they have enhanced.

The Museum of Modern Art donated the source material, which is extraordinary in and of itself. With little options for recording in 1902, the video was taken on Biograph 68mm stock film, which was exceptionally detailed for the time. Everything, however, appears better in 4K at 60 frames per second.

The Flying Train (also known as the Wuppertal Schwebebahn) passes past what used to be the city of Elberfeld, Ronsdorf, Cronenberg, Vohwinkel, and Barmen as it soars overhead, explains Denis. These later merged to become Wuppertal, a significant city in Western Germany with a population of roughly 355,100 people.

The Schwebebahn is the world’s oldest electric elevated railway system with hanging carriages. It was built in 1901 to connect numerous metropolitan regions and offer accessible public transportation, and it is credited with helping the city expand into what it is today. In addition, the city was one of Europe’s greatest industrial districts, and it continues to be a significant exporter of electronics, automobiles, and other goods to this day.

Despite the fact that it was built many years ago, the train is still in use today. However, it has recently got a substantial overhaul, with the structure being modernized in 1997 and new vehicles entering operation and beginning to transport people in December 2016.
