Wildlife officials said that a young elephant was successfully rescued from a manhole in central Thailand after his mother had been put to sleep to facilitate the procedure.
Early on Wednesday morning in Nakhon Nayok province, the calf plunged into a drainage trough near the Royal Hills golf course.
As the baby struggled to climb out of the deep pit, its worried mother, who was thought to be part of an elephant herd that was passing through the surrounding bush, stayed with it.
A local who was passing by spotted the couple and immediately informed Khao Yai National Park authorities and wildlife officials about the pachyderm’s predicament.
Due to the presence of the baby elephant’s frightened mother, would-be rescuers were originally unable to assist it and were forced to tranquilize the elder animal.
According to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plants Conservation, the mother elephant unfortunately fell partially into the hole before being dragged out with the aid of a digger and later revived.
The mother and calf were ultimately freed from the pit, and park officials declared that they had safely retreated back into the bush.
