The family of a California businessman killed during a hunting expedition in Gabon says it is still seeking clarity over the circumstances surrounding his death.

Ernie Dosio, 75, died after an encounter with elephants in the Lopé-Okanda National Park, according to safari operator Collect Africa. A professional guide accompanying him was seriously injured.

Confusion over initial reports

Speaking to media, Dosio’s former wife said the family initially received conflicting information about what had happened.

“The day it happened, we heard it was buffalo — and different things,” she said, adding that details provided to the family were inconsistent in the immediate aftermath.

She described the incident as a shock, noting Dosio’s long history as a hunter.

Fatal encounter during expedition

Reports indicate Dosio had travelled to Gabon on a guided hunting trip, where he was tracking a yellow-backed duiker, a species of forest antelope.

During the expedition, he and his guide are said to have encountered a group of forest elephants, including several females and a calf, in dense vegetation.

According to accounts cited by those familiar with the incident, the animals charged after being startled. The guide was reportedly injured first, leaving Dosio exposed in the undergrowth.

Reaction and online debate

Following news of his death, images of Dosio’s hunting trophies circulated online, prompting debate about big-game hunting.

Comedian Ricky Gervais commented on the incident on social media, drawing criticism from some users who described the remarks as insensitive.

Others defended Dosio, arguing that his hunting activities were conducted legally and within conservation frameworks.

Family response

Dosio’s son said public portrayals of his father had been “unfair” and did not reflect the full context of his activities.

A longtime associate also stated that his hunts were licensed and carried out under regulations intended to manage wildlife populations.

Ongoing arrangements

Officials are working with the United States Embassy in Gabon to arrange the return of Dosio’s body to California.

The incident has once again highlighted the complex and often polarising debate surrounding trophy hunting, where conservation, ethics and personal risk intersect. While investigations continue and details remain under review, the case underscores the unpredictable nature of encounters with wild animals—and the broader questions about how humans choose to engage with them.
