Rat Trapped In Storm Drain Had Lost Hope That Anyone Would Save Her

“She had these little eyes that screamed for help.”

Wendy Chairez was out for a bite with a few friends in Guadalajara, Mexico, the other night when something struck her eye — and shouted out to her heart.

There was a rat on the muddy and rainy road. She’d been stuck in a storm drain’s metal grating and was battling to get out.

“I witnessed how she tried to force herself out of the sewer with her legs.” But she couldn’t,” Chairez explained to The Dodo. “She had these tiny eyes that cried out for rescue.”

Chairez easily admits to being “terrified” of rats, but in her sorrow, she saw the mouse for what she truly is: an animal with feelings that only wants to live and be.

“She expressed such sympathy and anguish,” Chairez remarked. “So I suggested to my pals that we assist her.”

That’s just what she did.

Chairez set aside her dread and used her hands to gently take the rat out after attempting and failing to liberate it with a broomstick she’d discovered.

Here’s a video of that moment:

The mouse seems to have lost hope that anyone would come to her aid. But she was mistaken. Chairez had literally saved her life.

“The little mouse was really feeble,” Chairez explained, “but she clutched the broom handle and I took her to the sidewalk.”

The rat then fled to seek shelter from the rain. The fact that she was now safe was enough of a thank you for Chairez, even if her opinions regarding rats in general remained somewhat tepid.

“I respect them. In general, I love God’s creation,” she said. “I’m not going to go around the world telling people to save rats, but to love creation — and life — is to serve others. That’s the meaning of life.”
