Healthy Senior Dog Spared After Family Asked Veterinarians to Euthanize Her, Georgia Rescue Says

A healthy senior dog named Holly is safe after a family asked veterinarians to euthanize her only because they no longer wanted her. The vets refused, and a small Georgia rescue that specializes in older dogs stepped in just before Thanksgiving 2019, giving her a second chance.

The Request Veterinarians Refused

Euthanasia is generally reserved for animals that are terminally ill or suffering. Holly was neither. On November 25, 2019, the veterinary partners of Old Dog Home called the rescue’s founder, Melissa, with an urgent plea: a family had asked for their old dog to be put down because they didn’t want her anymore.

The vets described the dog as incredibly sweet and in decent health, and they declined to go through with it. Instead, they asked whether the rescue could take her in.

Who Is Behind Old Dog Home

Melissa runs Old Dog Home from her home in Conyers, Georgia. According to iHeartDogs, the senior dog rescue operates on an 11-acre property and takes in dogs over the age of seven from the Atlanta area. The Epoch Times, which identifies her as Melissa Elliot Smith, says she founded the charity to help old dogs that are dumped or given away for free.

Writing on Facebook, Melissa has described older dogs as resilient and forgiving, and as deserving of a forever family as much as any younger dog. The rescue had saved 25 dogs in the previous year, a high number for a small, self-operated organization.

A Favor the Rescue Could Barely Afford

The call came at a difficult time. Melissa has said her house was already full, with medical treatments coming up and the holidays approaching. But without her help, the dog would likely have been put down, so she went to meet her.

Holly was a dainty female, about 10 to 12 years old, with minor treatable problems including a yeast infection. She was also dirty and clearly uncared for.

“We Just Don’t Want Her Anymore”

Melissa met the man who was surrendering Holly. According to her account, the dog had been passed between families after her original owner died, and this family had no interest in caring for her. They did not even have basic information about her health. When Melissa asked why they wanted her euthanized, the man answered, “We just don’t want her anymore.” His young granddaughter added that the family preferred their other dogs.

A Wagging Tail and a Promise

Melissa saw plenty of life left in the old dog. Holly’s tail kept wagging throughout the painful scene, even though, as Melissa wrote, she was scared and confused. Melissa wrapped her in blankets and held her until she relaxed and began to snore, then promised her she would always be loved and wanted.

She named the dog Holly and brought her home in time for Thanksgiving.

Holly’s Recovery and Viral Moment

Holly received veterinary care, and tests brought good news: she did not have heartworms or any serious condition, though she was treated for an infection.

Her story spread quickly on Facebook. Three days after it was posted, Old Dog Home’s follower count had tripled, and adoption requests poured in. Holly was not to go to a new home until her health was cleared, and Melissa said she hoped to find a perfect forever home soon, one where Holly would be spoiled for the rest of her life.

Where Holly Is Now

According to iHeartDogs, Holly was adopted a few months later by a veterinarian and her family. The Epoch Times reports that the family has two girls and an 11-year-old senior dog to keep her company.

Melissa has said the dream is simple: each time a dog goes home, she gets an open spot to save another old dog nobody wanted.

How to Help Senior Dogs Like Holly

  • Consider adopting an older dog. Seniors often wait longest in shelters, and many are already calm and house-trained.
  • Support rescues. Small organizations like Old Dog Home depend on donations, volunteers and foster homes.
  • Ask about medical history. Veterinary records help new owners plan care for an older dog.

Everything a Senior Dog Needs

Many owners of older dogs look for products that keep them comfortable:

  • Orthopedic dog beds and warming blankets for sore joints.
  • Senior dog food and joint supplements, after checking with a veterinarian.
  • Pet insurance to help cover vet visits and unexpected costs.
  • Custom pet portraits and personalized keepsakes to celebrate a new family member.
