Waddles the Disabled Duck Takes His First Steps on His 3D-Printed Prosthetic Leg

Prosthetic limbs are used not just by humans, but also by injured or crippled animals. We’ve previously written on cats, dogs, and even an elephant who were fitted for prosthetics. Waddles, an adorable duck, is the most recent species to learn to walk on an artificial foot.

Waddles was born with a deformed leg, but Ben Weinman, his adoptive owner, wanted to help him live a better life. He contacted Derrick Campana of Bionic Pets, a Certified Pet Prostheticist who created a 3D-printed prosthetic leg and foot for him.

A footage from The Wizard of Paws, a NatGeo Wild series, was recently uploaded online, showcasing the touching moment when Waddles was fitted with his prosthetic limb. He’s not sure what to make of it at first, but with a little encouragement from Weinman and Campana, he begins cheerfully toddling away on both feet.

“I didn’t expect to get emotional about this,” Weinman adds. “However, when you accept these creatures, all you want to do is give them a decent life and treat them well.” “You watch people struggling, and you believe there’s nothing you can do,” he says. It is just heartbreaking. So, sure, Derrick hit the ball out of the park.”

Check out the wonderful moment below.
