Woman Drives a Dog 1,300 Miles Home Only to Discover Her Owner No Longer Wants Her

“I love her more than words can say.”

No one knows exactly how Blue, a pit bull mix pup, got from Florida to Michigan.

DEB LAMBESIS

In March, the dog was taken in by the Humane Society of Midland County in central Michigan. When staff members discovered she had a microchip after being found as a stray, they were thrilled.

They dialed the number associated with the chip. A Florida woman responded. Her dog had been gone for a week, she informed them. She wanted Blue back despite not knowing how she had crossed the nation.

The announcement that Blue and her owner had been reunited filled the office with joy. They put out a call on social media for a driver to take the 1-year-old puppy to Florida. Even the neighborhood media picked up on their request for a driver.

Logan Smith, an animal care technician with the Humane Society of Midland County, told us that they had received numerous offers of assistance. “The neighborhood came together in full. It was incredible.

Stephanie James, a Michigan citizen, was chosen as the chauffeur among the many applicants.

James informed us that the dog needed to return home. I love driving and I love Florida, so I reasoned, “You know, why not?”

James drove to the shelter to pick up Blue while taking time off from work to pick up her brother and fill up her gas tank. I exclaimed, “Oh my gosh, you’re too adorable,” as soon as I saw her. She is a gorgeous dog,” she remarked.

And off the trio went. “I didn’t even know Blue before I picked her up at the shelter,” James said. “During the trip, Blue would rest her head on my shoulder.”

About 1,300 miles later, after a few pit stops at gas stations and fast food joints, a dip in the ocean, and a hotel stay, they rolled into South Florida.

James claimed that the owner’s mother welcomed them inside when they got at the owner’s home. Blue realized where she was right away. “When she rushed up and through the house, everything appeared to be in order. James said that she rolled onto her back.

The owner of Blue arrived home after more than an hour. When Blue first spotted her, she “started bouncing around and was really thrilled,” according to James.

James claimed that they talked about how Blue might have traveled to Michigan.

When they weren’t at home, the dog was kept in a backyard cage, according to Blue’s relatives, and someone kept taking the dog. They think she was taken again or that she managed to escape.

She is an extremely intelligent, wiggly dog. They believe that she found her way close to the freeway and was picked up,” James stated.

After a brief conversation, the owner reportedly told James that she believed it would be best if Blue returned to Michigan.

“She told me, ‘I can’t commit to the dog because I work and go to school full-time. You appear to be decent individuals. Blue likes you a lot. She’s been well cared for by you. said James.

You folks could have told me this a long time ago, James thought in shock.

James and her brother then reloaded Blue into the vehicle and sped off.

Blue could be seen gazing back at the house and saying, “Wait a minute,” according to James. We told Blue, “It’s going to be OK, we love you. Her turning around to look out the window and back at us broke my heart. I tell myself, “I can’t be upset; this is what’s best for Blue.” I can’t be angry.

James called the Humane Society with the news that they were all heading back to Michigan. She told them she would love to adopt Blue, but her own home was pretty full with her other rescue dogs.

While James, her brother and Blue were back on the road, making more pit stops and hotel stays, the Humane Society put up a Facebook post telling everyone who rooted for Blue what had happened — and that she was now en route to Michigan and up for adoption.

As James drove, she had no idea how many inquiries from people who wanted to adopt Blue were flooding into the shelter.

Two hours after James returned to the Humane Society, a man who was approved to adopt Blue raced over to meet her.

“I was seeking a different dog. Six months ago, I had to put my pit bull to sleep, Robert Allison informed us. “When my cousin called, she inquired about the dog. I responded, “No.

After Allison read about Blue, got in touch with the shelter and submitted an application, they invited him over.

“I called my employer and requested permission to use my lunch break. Have you heard the tale of this dog, I asked? She did, my supervisor said,” he claimed. She allowed me to take the time, too.

Once he met Blue, it became obvious that they were a good match. Allison said, “I walked up and she jumped on me. She “took right to me” without a doubt.

The day Blue returned to the shelter, he adopted her and took her home.

Allison said Blue really loves his son and is fitting in very well. “Her daily ritual is getting up on the couch and licking me to death,” he said.

And just this week, James got to reunite with Blue.

James said the pup totally remembered her.

She is thrilled Blue has a good home and her story finally has a happy ending — it just wasn’t the one she originally expected when she drove off from Michigan to Florida.

“Honestly, I’d do it again for another dog. But hopefully next time it’s definitely a better situation,” she said.
