In a recent viral video, a heart-stopping moment unfolds as a young boy narrowly escapes a charging bison in Yellowstone National Park. The footage, shared by the YouTube channel All Sauce, captures a group of people approaching and photographing the largest land mammal in North America, unaware of the imminent danger they were about to face.
Yellowstone, a popular hiking destination, explicitly warns visitors against “willfully remaining near or approaching wildlife.” However, the video demonstrates the disregard for this crucial rule, leading to a perilous encounter with the massive bison.
As the group’s attention becomes too overwhelming for the bison, it decides to charge. The young boy finds himself separated from the group and must navigate through grass and fallen trees along a boardwalk to escape the charging behemoth. Miraculously, the boy manages to keep his footing and rejoin the group unharmed, though the gravity of the situation is not reflected in the laughter of his family and friends.
The incident has sparked criticism from viewers, with one commenter questioning, “Who lets their kids approach deadly animals? Those things are huge and agile.” Another observer pointed out the father’s laughter, emphasizing the potential danger the son faced.
Yellowstone National Park recommends that visitors maintain a distance of at least 23 meters (25 yards) from bison, elk, and other wildlife. Bison, in particular, have been responsible for more injuries to park visitors than any other animal. Warning signs of an impending charge include head bobbing, pawing, bellowing, and snorting.
In the event of a charge, the park advises visitors to walk or run away immediately and to use bear spray if the animal continues to pursue. The U.S. Department of the Interior underscores the formidable nature of bison, noting that they can reach heights of six feet and weigh up to 2,000 pounds. Remarkably agile, these creatures can sprint at speeds of around 40 miles per hour.
The fortunate escape of the young boy serves as a stark reminder of the importance of adhering to safety guidelines when interacting with wildlife.
