Star dune: Scientists solve mystery behind Earth’s largest desert sands

For centuries, the towering structures known as star dunes have captivated explorers and scientists alike with their awe-inspiring beauty and enigmatic origins. Named for their striking resemblance to celestial stars or pyramids, these colossal sand formations have long puzzled researchers, their age and formation process shrouded in mystery – until now.

Recently, a team of dedicated scientists has unveiled groundbreaking insights into the history and formation of star dunes, shedding light on their remarkable journey through time. Led by Prof Geoff Duller from the University of Aberystwyth and Prof Charles Bristow from Birkbeck University, this pioneering research marks a significant milestone in our understanding of Earth’s dynamic landscapes.

At the heart of this discovery lies Lala Lallia, a majestic star dune nestled within the Erg Chebbi sand sea of south-east Morocco. Standing tall at 100 meters and stretching over 700 meters wide, Lala Lallia is a testament to the immense forces of nature that shape our planet’s surface.

What sets star dunes apart is their unique formation process, driven by opposing winds that carve intricate patterns into the desert terrain. By meticulously analyzing the sediment grains within Lala Lallia, scientists have been able to unlock its ancient secrets, revealing that this magnificent dune emerged approximately 13,000 years ago.

The journey of Lala Lallia is a testament to the relentless march of time, with periods of dormancy interspersed with bursts of rapid growth. After its initial formation, the dune remained relatively stable for thousands of years before undergoing a period of expansion in recent millennia.

To unravel the age-old mystery of star dunes, scientists employed a sophisticated technique known as luminescence dating. By examining the grains of sand and measuring their exposure to daylight, researchers were able to determine the age of Lala Lallia with unprecedented accuracy.

Describing the mineral grains within the sand as “little rechargeable batteries,” Prof Duller explains the intricate process by which these grains store and release energy over time. Through meticulous laboratory analysis, scientists were able to harness the power of light emitted by these grains to unveil the ancient history of Lala Lallia.

While Lala Lallia stands as a testament to the enduring power of nature, it is but one example of these majestic dunes found across the globe. From the towering heights of Star Dune in Colorado to the vast expanses of the Sahara, these geological wonders continue to inspire awe and fascination among all who encounter them.

As we marvel at the breathtaking beauty of star dunes, let us also reflect on the profound insights they offer into the ever-changing landscape of our planet. For in understanding the mysteries of Earth’s majestic desert sands, we gain a deeper appreciation for the remarkable forces that shape our world.
