Lily the Labrador has been waiting in her yard every Friday for her best pal for the past two years. This friend is dependable, stopping every time he goes by to offer her snacks, pets, and play with her, much to Lily’s delight.
David, he’s the garbage collector in the neighborhood.

Lily has always enjoyed spending time in her Bedford, New Hampshire, front yard. She enjoys sitting and watching people pass by the house, and she is always ready to defend her family from any malicious squirrels that dare to invade the premises.
Lily had always hoped that someone would stop by and say hello. She waggled her tail at every passer-by, including mailmen and canvassers. No one, however, was paying her the attention she desired.
Lily, a perceptive dog, saw that her owners put trash containers out every Thursday night, and a guy came to take them away every Friday. Lily had a feeling this guy would become one of her closest friends.
“Their friendship has developed into the loveliest thing,” Ishaan Chatterjee, one of Lily’s owners, told The Dodo. “Every year, we give [our garbage man] holiday gifts to express our gratitude for the way he treats Lily.”
Lily’s friendship with the garbage man, David, is unique. While Lily loves everyone, including those who aren’t dog people, according to Chatterjee, he can tell that David and Lily have a deeper affinity.

Though it may have something to do with the treats in David’s pockets, Chatterjee feels Lily’s friendship with David reflects her propensity to see the best in others. Lily doesn’t care who you are or what you do; if you treat her with respect, she will always return the favor.
“She demonstrates how to be more considerate of others!” According to Chatterjee. “It’s incredible how much humans can learn from animals.”
