A single pregnant stingray hasn’t been around a male ray in 8 years. Now, many wonder if a shark is the father. Charlotte, a stingray residing in a tank at a North Carolina aquarium, finds herself at the center of a perplexing mystery. Despite the absence of a male ray in her vicinity, Charlotte was discovered to be pregnant, raising questions about the paternity of her offspring.

The intrigue surrounding Charlotte’s condition came to light when caretakers noticed her covered in shark bites, a telltale sign of shark mating. Speculation soared as experts and curious onlookers alike pondered the origin of Charlotte’s impending brood.

The Aquarium and Shark Lab in Hendersonville, North Carolina, shed light on Charlotte’s situation during a live video on Facebook. Charlotte, a round stingray native to Southern California, is estimated to be between 12 and 16 years old and is carrying three to four pups – a revelation that both delights and astonishes her caretakers.

Brenda Ramer, founder and executive director of Team ECCO, remarked on the uniqueness of Charlotte’s circumstance, noting that she hasn’t been in the presence of a male ray for at least eight years. Ramer offered two plausible explanations for Charlotte’s mysterious pregnancy, one of which ignited a viral frenzy.

The notion that Charlotte could have mated with one of the young male sharks sharing her tank quickly captured the public’s imagination. However, experts swiftly dispelled this notion, citing anatomical and genetic disparities between sharks and rays that render interspecies procreation implausible.

Kady Lyons, a research scientist at the Georgia Aquarium, emphasized that there are no “shark-ray shenanigans” at play, reaffirming the scientific impossibility of such an event. Instead, experts point to a rare biological phenomenon called parthenogenesis as the likely explanation for Charlotte’s pregnancy.

An ultrasound of a stingray at a North Carolina aquarium shows that it’s pregnant – without a male ray.

Parthenogenesis, or “virgin birth,” occurs when smaller cells separate from the mother’s eggs and merge to create offspring. While exceedingly rare, this process has been documented in sharks, which are closely related to rays.

Ramer expressed confidence in this explanation, highlighting the miraculous nature of parthenogenesis. As Charlotte’s due date approaches, anticipation mounts, and regardless of the father’s identity, the aquarium recognizes the extraordinary nature of Charlotte’s situation.
