A couple from Eastbourne, East Sussex, has been handed suspended jail sentences after leaving their elderly dog unattended while they embarked on a family vacation, resulting in the tragic demise of their beloved pet.
Keith Byrne, aged 38, and his partner, 42-year-old Sophie Singer, opted to leave their boxer named Bentley behind as they departed for a holiday retreat at a Center Parc. Little did they know, their decision would lead to dire consequences for their furry companion.
Upon their departure, Bentley was left to fend for himself in their residence, a distressing situation that drew the attention of concerned neighbors. RSPCA inspectors were alerted to the plight of the neglected dog, prompting a swift response to rescue him from his solitary ordeal.
However, upon inspection, it became tragically apparent that Bentley’s condition had deteriorated significantly during his owners’ absence. The emaciated dog was discovered at the base of the stairs, surrounded by meager remnants of food left behind by well-meaning neighbors. Veterinarians attending to Bentley noted his overgrown nails, indicative of prolonged neglect, along with an ear infection and a troubling skin condition.
An examination revealed that Bentley had been left to suffer in silence for an extended period, estimated to be more than four weeks. His desperate attempts to stave off starvation led him to consume whatever morsels he could scavenge, including harmful items like food wrappers and even a felt-tip pen.
Despite efforts to save him, Bentley succumbed to the severe neglect he endured, leaving a void in the hearts of those who fought to rescue him. In light of this heartbreaking case, Byrne and Singer faced justice at Lewes Crown Court, where they received suspended jail terms of nine months and six months, respectively, each suspended for a two-year period.
In addition to their suspended sentences, the couple was banned from owning animals for five years and ordered to undertake a substantial amount of unpaid community work. Furthermore, they were instructed to pay £350 each in costs, serving as a stark reminder of the consequences of neglecting the welfare of vulnerable animals.
RSPCA inspector Tony Woodley emphasized the gravity of the situation, denouncing the couple’s actions as a flagrant disregard for the well-being of their pet. He commended the vigilance of concerned residents whose timely intervention facilitated Bentley’s rescue, albeit in vain.
