Imagine a giant clothespin, seemingly holding onto a mound of dirt and grass. This playful sculpture, designed by Turkish artist Mehmet Ali Uysal, resides on the outskirts of Liege, Belgium, adding a touch of whimsy to the landscape.
Uysal, a professor of art at the Middle East Technical University, is known for his works that create clever illusions. This giant clothespin is no exception. By strategically placing the sculpture on a mound of earth, Uysal tricks the eye into believing the clothespin is actually pinching the ground.
The sculpture was originally created for the Festival of the Five Seasons in Chaudfontaine Park, where it continues to delight visitors today. It’s a reminder that art can be fun and surprising, inviting us to see the familiar in a new light.
