A zoo in New York is celebrating the birth of the first baby to be raised by a couple of male penguins, who are claimed to be “doing a fantastic job.”

According to a piece published by the Washington Post over the weekend, the Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse has long tried to increase the population size of Humboldt penguins. Humboldt penguins, in particular, are now listed by the International Union for Conservation of Nature as a “vulnerable” population.

Two male Humboldt penguins called Elmer and Lima are keeping the youngster warm and safe since it hatched on 1 Jan.

“The chick weighed 226 grams (8 ounces) during our initial health check when it was five days old,” Rosamond Gifford Zoo Director Ted Fox revealed in a recent press statement. “Elmer and Lima are still brooding and caring for it, and they’re doing an excellent job.” And when they’ve done it a few times and done it effectively, they’ll be selected to foster future eggs.”

Elmer and Lima’s tale is crucial to tell because it “may assist people of all ages and backgrounds empathize to animals,” according to Fox.

The name of the girl, on the other hand, appears to be a mystery. The zoo’s penguin care crew had previously offered name candidates, which were subsequently knocked out by a naming vote.
