A Sperm Whale Comes Up To A Diver Who Is “Asking” For Assistance With A Jammed Hook

by Stephen King

It’s incredible how smart these critters are. It was a joy to watch this.

Something remarkable happened while a man was diving out at sea.

He was “asked” for assistance by a sperm whale.

Sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) are enormous creatures that may reach lengths of up to 55 feet.

They’re massive, but they’re also fragile.

According to scientists, these whales have the greatest brains of any living mammal. This whale’s intellect may have enabled it to seek assistance from a diver.

Spermaceti is a chemical found in enormous concentrations in the heads of sperm whales.

These whales, despite their size, are peaceful and only eat squid that they catch when diving to the ocean’s depths.

Hugues Vitry is the diver.

In this video, he removes a little fish hook from the whale’s lower jaw. He is a world-famous Maurician environmentalist and underwater photographer.

Vitry is also the Vice President of the Marine Megafauna Conservation Organization and the Diving Centre Manager.

He once managed to liberate a whale that had become entangled in ropes. Vitry is dedicated to assisting and conserving marine life, believing that one individual can make a significant difference.

He also warns against taking what the media says about the seas at face value.

This was amazing, especially given his background.

The whale approaches Vitry and moves its massive bulk sideways before extending its jaw to signal the diver that she requires assistance.

This massive whale was irritated by a single little hook. Consider the damage that massive items may do.

As the whale swims beside Vitry, he focuses his camera on her and narrates what he sees.

It’s a sight to behold.

Vitry claims to have seen blood.

The translation is sloppy, but he claims the hook was attached to the whale’s tooth, which he was able to remove with some force from the whale’s mouth.

The enormous animal remained unfazed throughout.

The finest part is still to come.

Vitry was taken aback when the whale seemed to stay for a while after he tried to comfort it that the ordeal was done.

In exchange, the whale appeared to be thanking him! Take it from one of the viewers who appeared to comprehend Vitry’s French:

“For those interested, the guy (an overseas Frenchman, I’d say Reunionnais, but he could be from another island) talks about how strange it was to see this sperm whale approach them with its mouth open yet unaggressively, how he saw that its mouth was bleeding, and how after the hook was removed, he took a little time to try to make the whale understand it was over, hugged it, and how the sperm whale stood by for a while after that,

Whales are highly intelligent creatures.

Vitry even hugged the whale as he pressed his head against hers and whispered words of comfort.

See Vitry share this precious moment with the whale in the video below!
